Myanmar/ Burma – Telephone conversation between Jean-Yves Le Drian and Aung San Suu Kyi (Nov. 6) [fr]
Jean-Yves Le Drian, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, spoke on the phone this morning with Aung San Suu Kyi, Burma’s State Counselor.
The minister for Europe and foreign affairs expressed France’s deep concern at the violence and forced displacement endured by the Rohingya populations. He requested that the Burmese security forces put an end to the violence in Rakhine State, that they ensure, without discrimination, the protection of the civilian populations and their property and that they guarantee, as swiftly as possible, the restoration of safe and unrestricted humanitarian access as well as media access.
Jean-Yves Le Drian indicated that France supported the commitment of Burma’s civilian government, announced on October 12 by Aung San Suu Kyi, to organize, in collaboration with the UN, the return and resettlement of the refugees and the provision of humanitarian assistance.
During this telephone conversation, Jean-Yves Le Drian reaffirmed France’s support for the Burmese democratic transition led by Aung San Suu Kyi.
